Here is some information that you can get from you serial number after 1921 Remington's manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. Does this coding system work for shotguns too?

I have an 870 Wingmaster in excellent condition w/a 28', Modified choked barrel that has a 2-3/4' chamber. There are various stampings around the barrel, such as an 'H', but it's all by itself with no other marks that look like they would go with it. The serial number begins and ends with the letter 'V'; would that help? I'd like to know when it was made, can anyone help??

I recently purchased the above rifle for $350 (which included a cheap 4X scope and a leather sling, along with about 3o rounds of factory ammo). The rifle is in excellent condition with the exception of most of the bluing is gone from the bolt and I believe the stock may have been refinished as it is dull as though rubbed with linseed oil. The bore is excellent and it is a good shooter. The barrel stamping is as follows: FYXX3M (a symbol that looks like a small mountain) o L V. I cannot match this up with anything that makes sense to me. The numbers on the receiver are 17,255. Could one of you help the new guy decipher this?

Thanks in advance.. Thanks for the answer - I think!? The seller told me it was a Mohawk - but nowhere on the rifle does it say that. The receiver is marked Remington Model 600 with the serial #17,XXX. The left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver has the letter stampings as listed in my first post. The right side of the barrel near the receiver has three stamps: closest to the receiver is ' G)' (only the G is sideways and the ) is more like a sideways V). The next stamping is what appears to be REP inside of an oval.

The last stamping looks like and upside down heart. The barrel is 18.5' long with a nylon rib. The caliber is.308 Win.
